Perfect Pattern Parcel - the Julia Cardigan

I got to sew for myself again!

I have been meaning to start sewing for myself more often for ages, but I love making things for my daughter so much AND she actually needs a whole new wardrobe for spring/summer... It's like I needed a good enough excise to put aside cute little patterns and do some selfish sewing...

... and then...

Pattern Parcel #6: Choose your own price and support DonorsChoose. Win/win!
Is there a better excuse to finally sew something for myself? I signed up for the tour before I realised how scared I was to be participating is something as big as awesome as Perfect Pattern Parcel. Me, who has only made three simple things for myself, sewing something awesome for PPP sounded crazy. But I love crazy (just like prince Hans, although I am not as mean).

I have been admiring the Julia Cardigan by Mouse House Creations for a long time, so While she was sleeping I finally made one for myself.

I used 100% wool jersey I bought from House of Cloth recently. This stuff if divine! Perfect for my fourth selfish sewing project - the Julia cardigan.

The Julia cardigan pattern offers a few options - full length, 3/4 or extended cap sleeves and different ways to make and finish a collar. Hayley provides a lot of information about sewing with knits, so even someone with limited experience in sewing with stretchy fabrics like myself can make a great garment. OK, maybe calling my new cardigan 'great' goes a little too far, but I still love it.

I knew I wanted to make a no hem/doubled over collar, but I only had 1 1/2 metres of this gorgeous fabric - not quite enough... To keep a long story short I am glad I spent many hours playing Tetris growing up. I managed to cut all the pattern pieces out and sew a new cardigan!

Would you like to make a new cardigan for yourself? You can get the Julia cardigan pattern as well as four more wonderful patterns until the 31st of October 2014.

Patterns included in this Perfect Pattern Parcel are:
Bronte Top by Jennifer Lauren
Hudson Pant by True Bias
Julia Cardigan by Mouse House Creations
Syrah Skirt by Lauren Dahl/Selvage Designs
Zsálya Top and Dress by Kate and Rose

If you choose to pay USD 32 or more, you will also be sent a bonus pattern, the Odette Dress by Bluegingerdoll.

If you have not heard of the Perfect Pattern Parcel, this is how it works:
Here at Perfect Pattern Parcel we believe in supporting independent pattern designers. It's our opinion that indie patterns are just, well, better than big box patterns, and we're pretty sure our customers think so too. So, we allow customers to allocate part of their Parcel price to the charity Donorschoose.org in order to help classrooms in need. Pattern Parcel donates all profits after expences from Parcel sales to the charity as well.

  1. I'm thinking about buying the parcel if only just for this pattern, it is my favorite style of jackets but when am I actually going to find time to sew for myself (and then wear it?? yikes!) I love the red color on you! Do you find yourself starting every conversation with "oh this old thing? Yea I made it myself..why do you ask?" And them answering "hmmm I didn't ask...." No??? Must be just my thing whenever I make something impressive hahah O_O

    1. Thank you Alisa :) I do like to point out the things I have made if people ask. I must be getting more used to wearing home made clothes as I don't feel as awkward anymore :) I hope you will eventually get a little more time to make things for yourself :)

    1. Thank you Marisa :) I do love this style, and red is my fave colour. Very often when LM would point at something red and say, "Mummy, there is your favourite colour" :)

    1. Thank you Victoria. I just prefer natural fibers. There is not much choice of good quality knots in Bendigo, so it was either some cheap and nasty polyester stuff of this... I chose to spend more to get good stuff and crossed my fingers hahaha

    1. I know, a bit of a crazy choice of fabric for someone who has very limited experience sewing with knits! I felt super anxious cutting into it, but I wanted to make something I would want to wear again and again. It is far from perfect, but it is definitely wearable! Red is my fave colour :)

    1. Thank you Elizabeth. This cardi was pretty easy to make, even though I have very limited experience sewing knits. it is also oh so comfy to wear :) I was hoping to make a 3/4 sleeve version, but I just did not have enough fabric. I love the extended cap s;eeve version now too. And wool jersey is simply amazing!
