Tulip tunic

Eva from With Love by Eva is a very talented seamstress from Belgium. I have been following her sewing adventures for a while now. Eva recently released her first sewing pattern, the Tulip Dress and Top pattern in collaboration with Katrien from KaatjeNaaisels, another wonderful Belgian sewing blogger. Today I am pleased to show you my take on this pattern.

The Tulip was originally released in Dutch, however Eva and Katrien received a high number of requests to translate the pattern into English. I guess they are super lovely girls because - ta-da! - the Tulip pattern is now also available in English.

The Tulip can be sewn as a dress or a tunic. Since Baby L is not walking yet I decided to make a tunic length. It is more crawling friendly ;)

Like with any other pattern it is important to measure the child you want to sew for before deciding on the size. The Tulip has slimmer fit. Baby L's current chest measurement is 47-48 cm, depending on how much she is wiggling while I am measuring her. Baby L's chest measurement puts her into size 1 according to the size chart. Spring is failing us miserably this year. It is still very cold and super wet. I decided to size up to 18 months to make sure Baby L can wear her new Tulip tunic over a singlet and a bodysuit until it gets warmer.

The Tulip can be sewn in various fabrics, however it is very important that the petals and the bodice lining are made from lightweight fabrics. Once the bodice is assembled, there are six layers of fabric around the neckline. If you want to use heavier weight fabric you can borrow Mieke's idea to minimise the bulk.

I originally wanted to use Japanese cotton lawn to make a hi-low hem tunic, however when I went to get the fabric my eyes fell on this brightly coloured vintage cotton. Once I saw it there was no going back. The fabric is lightweight and even a little sheer, however not as flow-ey as lawn or voile. I didn't have much of this fabric and there simply was no room to play to make a hi-low hem tunic. Maybe next time :)

I made my own piping using coral-pink voile. The petals and the bodice are lined with off-white voile.

Eva and Katrien provided two closure options, an invisible zipper or buttons. Guys, I am in team buttons always and forever! I chose vintage buttons that I felt suited the fabric perfectly. Unfortunately I didn't get close ups on the buttons, but you can see then on Instagram.

What do I think about this pattern? I love it. Seriously. This little tunic was so much fin to sew. I love the unique bodice detail. The tunic looks so adorable on Baby L. Miss R could not stop commenting about how cute Baby L looked :) Ah, this little human has no idea how blessed she is to have such a loving and caring big sister!

Eva and Katrien offer a 10% discount on the Tulip pattern until the 8th of October. Simply enter the code HAPPYTULIP (all capitals) at checkout. The pattern can be purchased HERE.

  4. This is the smallest Tulip top I've ever seen (nobody else seems to think about crawling comfort, haha) and by far the cutest too! The fabric is so colorful and sunny that summer just HAS to come when seeing this! I love the piping, I love the buttons (although I'm in team zipper forever) and I absolutely adore the pictures where she's stepping with a hand and gives us a good view on the cuteness of her top. I'm sorry for the length of this comment, but I just can't stop saying how adorable this is! Thank you so much!

    1. Thank you Masha. I love yellow also. It looks like yellow is Baby L's colour, so I should use it more often!

  9. Everything about this is so perfect!! She is adorable! The fabric is perfect for summer! And the photos... Amazing my sweet friend!!
And yes, some younger siblings have no idea how lucky they are to have a loving older sibling! My oldest is the sweetest with his sisters (well, except when they fight over TV control or iPad time, haha :) ) and I bet he is going to be the most amazing older brother to the little one coming soon. <3

    1. Thank you Sara :) I think fighting is unavoidable, but as long as they are the best of friends most of the time my mama's heart will be content :)

Congrats on the addition to your family - one more precious person for your kids to adore, love and protect (and fight over a tv remote eventually haha)
