Perfect Pattern Parcel #7 - Barcelona bag

I got to sew for the Perfect Pattern Parcel again! I made a...

... {drum roll}...

A bag! Ta-da! I have been meaning to make one during Selfish Sewing Week, but got sick and gave up. And then, just like last time, Perfect Pattern Parcel provided me with an opportunity to make my first bag.

Pattern Parcel #7: Choose your own price and support DonorsChoose. Win/win!

The patterns included in this Parcel are:
Barcelona Bag and Wallet by Pat Bravo
Butterfly Sling Purse by Emmaline Patterns
Evelyn Handbag by ChrisW Designs
Midtown Messenger Bag by Betz White
Betty Bowler by Swoon Sewing Pattern

Bonus Pattern:
Choose a price of $32 or greater for Parcel #7 and you will automatically also be sent the Bonus Pattern! That's just over $5 a pattern. The Bonus Pattern for this Parcel is the brand new Daphne Bag pattern from Clover & Violet. The Daphne is a slouchy satchel that can be worn cross body or as a shoulder bag. The zip top keeps your gear secure and the internal pockets keep your accessories where you need them. This is a brand new, never been seen before pattern and is an exclusive opportunity for Parcel #7 customers!

I have made the Barcelona Bag. My bag is smaller than what you see on the pattern cover. When I cut out the pattern pieces printed at 100% I thought it looked too big compared to what I would usually use. I printed the pattern again at 80%, and this is what I got. I am wondering if my bag looks rather small now.

Apart from altering the size of the bag, I only used three prints of quilting cotton. You see, when I first started sewing I thought quilting cotton was the best thing in the world. Colours don't run, bright prints, can be purchased cheaply... I may ended up with more quilting cotton than I needed. What I did not have was six prints that would work well together. I did have three, so I went with that. I also omitted the ruffle... I am just not the ruffly type :)

This bag was easy to sew. Perfect for the first timer. There is a super cute wallet included in this pattern.

I showed this bag to my mum last time we chatted on Skype, and she told me she wanted one. When Little Monkey saw it, she said she needed one, then two, then ten... Well, there are at least two people who like my new bag :)

  1. I love your bag and the changes you made. The fabrics are gorgeous and I like it best without the ruffle too. Good size, the original was way too big for my needs.

  2. I didn't like the large size of that bag when I first saw it on the Pattern Parcel, but I love that you made it smaller and I too am not the ruffle type, so I really love the look of your bag and may just make one now too. I post the bag I made on Thursday as part of this blog tour.

    1. Thank you Daryl. Isn't it nice to be able to 'adopt' the pattern the way that suits us :)

  3. I think that shrinking this pattern to 80% is a win. It makes it a great purse size and very wearable. I also love that we keep challenging you. It's fabulous to keep learning new skills, no?

    1. Yes Jill, trying something new is always fun! I htink I could lengthen the handle a little. It is a cute little bag. I feel it adds a splash of colour when I wear plain colours.
