Now the curtains were finished I could sew fun things again! My self-imposed curfew was over. Hooray! I thought there was no better way to reward myself than to make something for my daughter.
While she was sleeping, I made a new Louisa dress for Little Monkey.
I love this pattern. Last year I made a summer version of this dress. Little Monkey's new dress is perfect for spring. I finished it just in time for Father's Day! In Australia we celebrate Father's day on the first Sunday of September.
Because Little Monkey loves her daddy (and I am rather fond of him too), we took him for a trip to Melbourne to celebrate. We stayed in St Kilda, just a few minutes walk from the beach. The weather was perfect, so we enjoyed a walk along the beach and collected a lot of shells. Oh, and took a lot of photos of Little Monkey's new 'Father's Day' dress!
I opted for a plain back version this time. Sometimes less is more, right?
The main feature of this dress is the pocket, of course. Little Monkey was especially excited about this pocket as it is a similar shape to a pocket on her daddy's hoodie :) She is such a daddy's girl at the moment it is super adorable.
I usually buy inexpensive fabric to make clothes for my daughter (with her denim and Liberty Mara dress being an exception), but I could not resist this gorgeous Japanese cotton. I bought it from House of Cloth. It was on sale but still at around $20/metre mark. I figured that every now and then I can make her something extra special. She is worth it.
I did cheat a little and lined the pocket with cheap light blue quilting cotton. I only had enough for this pattern piece. The colour was so close to the blue on the main fabric, it was just meant to be! I really like this little sneaky detail.
Another little detail that I unfortunately forgot to photograph is a zipper guard. An essential detail if the body of the dress is not lined. Well, in my books anyway :)
Just perfect for Spring weather, Jenya!!! I hate sewing curtains, too and I would do anything to not have to sew them.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pam! There might be a few more 'reward' outfits for my daughter as I have to sew more curtains. We got a quote for custom made curtains for our bedroom, and we just can't afford it! I have not seen anything ready-made that I liked, so...
DeleteHi Jenya, I've featured your Fathers Day dress today...
DeleteI totally can relate to the curtain thing. isn't home sewing just soo boring? clothes instead - fun, fun, fun ;)
ReplyDeleteand that dress is super beautiful. you got me thinking about that understitch thing. might have to finally buy my first oliver+s pattern, too..,
Thank you Annika. Yes I am discovering home sewing is not as much fun as sewing for my daughter! I keep on telling myself I would start sewing for myself more, but there are so many cool kid projects, and I am so easily distracted :) Understitching is just about the coolest thing I have learned! Makes things look so much neater. Well, the two things I made using this method anyway hehe
Deletevery cute!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jess :)
DeleteCute dress, you sure know how to pick a fabric! When you are into sewing clothes, sewing curtain is not a fun project anymore, isn't it? To me it is an iron board cover...I have been putting off for a year, recently started, and left it half-done for weeks... ;o
ReplyDeleteWell, here is to ironing board covers and curtains then ;)
DeleteHi Jenya! I am always a huge fan of the Louisa dress and your version does not disappoint. Really sweet! The fabric is insane... I love it and definitely worth you splurging on... :-)

Thank you Natalie :) I have enough of this fabric left to make something for me. That was the original plan... My husband is horrified hahaha
DeleteThat is just beautiful! Hope Daddy had a great day!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mel. Yes we all had the most beautiful day :)
DeleteI love this dress! And the pictures :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Mieke :)
DeleteI love Little Monkey's dress. She is just the cutest :) Glad she was able to enjoy the weekend finally, sounds like you all had a great time!
ReplyDeleteThank you Renee :) She is so cute and she provided us with so much entertainment during the trip!
DeleteYou're better than me- my curtains never got finished! This is beautiful. Looks like the perfect dress for a celebration weekend :)
ReplyDeleteThank you :) She absolutely loves this dress, and it makes me very happy :) I consulted LM about fabric and trims, and got thumbs up from her :)
DeleteThis turned out so pretty! Love the fabrics you've chosen!
ReplyDeleteThank you Kristy. It felt so nice sewing with nice fabric. It is nice to be able to indulge every now and then :)
DeleteHeeey, your piping looks sooo neat! A really great looking dress, I like that pattern a lot! I have a few of the "curtain" projects myself and putting myself on a sewing diet only stressing me out more! Come and help me sew :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Alisa :) Would it help to get back to your 'curtain' projects if I tell you that once they are finished you will experience a huge relief!
