The English edition of La Maison Victor offers 16 DIY projects and comes with eight full sized sewing patterns for women, men and children suitable for beginners through to advanced sewists. You can see them here. These patterns are printed on good quality paper, so if you have been traumatised by tissue pattern sheets in the past, rejoice! I think it is important to note that patterns do not include seam allowances. In my opinion the instructions are clear and accompanied by illustrations, which are great for visual people like myself.
The tour participants were encouraged to make something from the English edition of the magazine to help promote it. There were three patterns that captured my attention straight away - the Dolores midi skirt, the Malia top (check out Kate's take on this pattern) and the Solange knit dress (how cool is this version). I am too fragile to be modelling summer outfits in cool temperatures so I decided to play it safe and make a spring version of the Dolores skirt. The other two patterns are still on my To Sew list!
The Dolores is a gathered skirt sewn into a flat waistband featuring buttons down the front and optional pockets. It works very well in fabrics that have drape. I made mine from cotton/tencel denim I purchased from my local Spotlight. I could not resist the colour and the texture of this fabric. Metal buttons are from Spotlight as well.
I made a couple of slight alterations to my skirt. The waistband ended up too big on me. Naturally I discovered that after sewing it onto the skirt. Since I had to unpick the waistband to shorten it I decided to make it narrower as well. The wider waistband did not look too good on me. I also made the skirt as long as the pattern allowed.
I am very happy with my new skirt. I can wear it now while it is still cool but it will also be just fine for summer. And it was super quick to make! If you are not into midi skirts then you can easily make it shorter! I love Suz's version here.
I have a couple of tops I can wear with my new Dolores skirt, but I wanted to make a new one, something in a happy colour. So I whipped up an Idyllwild tee by Itch to Stitch in mustard Art Gallery knit from Ministry of Fabric. Hopefully I won't be pulled over by the fashion police!

What a beautiful, drapey skirt, Jenya! I like the changes that you made to it to have it suit your taste, too. You look gorgeous. And wow, I need to look through the magazine! I've been interested in their patterns, but have been too scared to attempt anything in French, heh heh.
